SEVERE WEATHER WARNING.
ISSUED BY MetService AT 11:40 am 22-Jul-2009
AN ACTIVE FRONT TO BRING A BURST OF SEVERE GALES TO MANY EASTERN AREAS, AND HEAVY RAIN IN THE WEST MetService is expecting a deep low to pass southeastwards just to the south of the South Island Thursday morning. Active frontal bands associated with this low should bring bursts of heavy rain to western parts of both islands, starting Wednesday night in the South Island, and spreading to the North Island on Thursday. Also, a period of severe gale northwesterlies should affect Canterbury and Marlborough from early morning, then spread northwards to affect parts of the North Island.
Up to 150mm of rain is expected in Westland and Fiordland. Up to 100mm could fall in the northwest of the South Island, and in the North Island high country from the Tararuas to Waikato, including the central plateau. Higher parts of Mount Taranaki could receive 150mm.
People in these areas should look out for rapidly rising river levels.
A period of severe gales is likely in eastern areas from Marlborough to Hawkes Bay, including Wellington. These winds have the potential to bring down trees and powerlines, and to make driving difficult, especially for motorcycles and high sided vehicles.
