On demand books

May 12, 2009

One of the interesting developments in the world of publishing and book sales that might have an impact on libraries, is the “Print on Demand” book service. This form of ebook publishing is when a purchasergoes to a book store, and buys a book which they print from a machine. Thus alleviateting the need for large print runs that don’t sell. Well below is a video of the latest version of the Espresso Book Machine. Look for it in a book store in a major centre near you soon. I think it is an exciting development in the world of book publishing, but no more of a threat to libraries than mass market paperbacks. Who knows, one day maybe that’s how we will purchase the books for the library?
