Urban fantasist – Kim Harrison

May 11, 2011

Kim Harrison, dark urban fantasy author of the New York Times bestselling Pale Demon, was born and raised in the upper Midwest.  Harrison is  best known for her Rachel Morgan / Hollows urban fantasy series, which is up to number 9 now.   Kim also writes under her own name of Dawn Cook.

After gaining her bachelors in the sciences, she moved to South Carolina, where she remained until recently moving back to Michigan because she missed the snow.  She’s currently developing a young adult series between working on the Hollows books and a Hollows-based graphic novel, and is a member of both the Romance Writers of America and The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.  When not at her desk, she’s most likely to be found landscaping her new/old Victorian home, or scouring antique shops to fill it.

The Hollows books are set in an alternate history, where a worldwide pandemic caused by genetically modified tomatoes led to the death of a large portion of the world’s human population. At that point, the hidden “Inderlanders,” – creatures such as witches, werewolves, vampires, and more – came forward and revealed their existence to the world.
There are some great stories published under Dawn’s name also.  I particularly enjoyed the Truth series, which is a very original fantasy featuring magic and dragon-like creatures that can shape-shift into humans. It’s a fantasy series, with a sprinkle of intrigue and romance.
