Love letter to a vanished age…

November 25, 2011

Isn’t Downton Abby a fantastic production?  I just love losing myself in that bygone era, where the cares of the gentry and servants contrast so to our modern lives. Of course, they are struggling with current issues like solo-parenting, poverty, deceit and murder, but somehow it just seems so much more charming in that setting!

Highclere Castle is ‘Downton Abbey’, and you can read all about this stately home, and the fascinating Carnavon aristocratic family in “Lady Almina and the real Downton Abbey” by the Countess of Carnavon.

“Larkrise to Candleford” is another fantastic BBC series based on the books by Flora Thompson.  It follows the story of young Laura, who moves from the hamlet of Larkrise to the town of Candleford to work in the Post Office.

Fantastic sets and acting with the likes of Dawn French and Julia Sawalha make this a delightful period drama that will appeal to the whole family. Sadly cancelled at the height of it’s popularity in 2011, you can still enjoy four wonderful series. Only $3.50 for a week’s hire, that’s good value entertainment.
