NZ Post Children’s Book Awards – Nominees 2012

The New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children & Young Adults rewards excellence in children’s literature, recognising the best books for children and teenagers published annually in New Zealand. Awards for the New Zealand Post Book Awards are made in four categories: Young Adult Fiction, Junior Fiction, Non-fiction, Picture Book.

  • The Junior Fiction, Young Adult Fiction and Non-Fiction Awards winners receive $7,500 each.
  • For the Picture Book Award, the winning author and illustrator each receive $3,750.

Five finalists are selected for each category and from these a winner in each category is selected. The finalists for 2012 are listed below. The winners will be announced 16 May 2012. To vote or for more information

NEW ZEALAND POST BOOK OF THE YEAR – The supreme winner is the book which, in the opinion of the judges, achieves outstanding excellence in all general judging criteria. The winner receives $7,500.

BEST FIRST BOOK – This award of $2,000 is given to a previously unpublished author or illustrator from any category.

CHILDREN’S CHOICE AWARD – Considered one of the highest accolades a children’s author can receive, this award is voted on by children of school age from all over New Zealand.  Vote online at or by using the special voting card available from bookshops, libraries or schools. Voting closes at 5.00pm, Friday 27 April 2012.

New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards Festival begins Monday 7 May until Wednesday 16 May. During this period, Tararua District Library hosts it’s annual NZ Book Awards Trophy Quiz.  For primary school children, this quiz is based on the nominated finalists books. The sooner your school’s team/s start reading the better because the more often you read a book – and the more members of your team who’ve read it – the better your chances!
