Local hero

March 16, 2012

With Anzac Day fast approaching, our thoughts begin to turn towards New Zealand and Australian soldiers, and what they did for their countries.

Featuring on Prime at 8.45pm on Sunday 18 March 2012 is the documentary “Lost Airmen of Buchenwald”.  This is the story of 168 allied airmen, shot down over France and imprisoned in Buchenwald concentration camp by the Gestapo.

Tararua farmer, Phil Lamason, was the senior ranking officer and squadron leader of all these men. He led them through three terrible months, until they were ‘rescued’ by the German air force, and transferred to Stalag Luft III prisoner of war camp for a further six months.

Phil Lamason is mentioned in “Night after night : New Zealanders in Bomber Command” by Max Lambert.
