Nine reasons to save public libraries

August 24, 2012

In some countries, particularly England and America, public libraries have to fight tooth and nail for their existence.

In New Zealand (so far) we are luckier in that some enlightened councillors and government officials recognise the importance of libraries – although we do still have to justify expenditure, and always struggle to illustrate that librarians are trained information management professionals.

This very interesting article by Emily Bristol expands on nine very good reasons to save public libraries. Something worth thinking about.

“It may just be the last free space that is truly free and there for everyone — homeless, young, old, rich, poor, and any race under the sun. We are all welcome there. We are all equal there. Doesn’t that seem like a space too valuable to lose?”
