“The 13th Sacrifice” by Debbie Viguie (Arrow, 2012)

First in the Witch Hunt series

First in the Witch Hunt series

This book is a little different from the usual paranormal books which all seem to find a love interest and give us blow by blow accounts of the relationship.

It’s about a young woman who is a cop and happens to be a non-practising witch. Asked to go undercover to find out who is killing young women in Boston, she returns to Salem where she used to live and where her whole Coven were destroyed 15 years ago. Suppressing memories of her childhood, she begins to fall under the allure of using magic and comes close to losing everything she’s worked so hard to achieve. She does meet a guy but they have so many issues I’m not sure how that’s going to pan out.

It’s a quick read with lots of action and suspenseful chapter endings that make you want to keep reading. The first in what is hopefully going to be a long series, this is an easy book although it can get quite graphic and spooky! There are hints within the story of secrets buried which will obviously come out in future books, like ‘The last grave’. If you like books with unusual background stories, you will enjoy this author and although the paranormal is a big point of the book, the mystery and twists lift it from others in this genre. Enjoy!
