Chris Barns (aka Brolga) is a former city boy who is now devoted to saving orphaned baby kangaroos, and then releasing them at The Kangaroo Sanctuary he operates near Alice Springs.   The Sanctuary is a 90 acre wildlife reserve where he single-handedly dug a 4km (2.5-mile) trench and hammered more than 4,000m (13,120ft) of chain-mesh to 450 fence posts to house his mob of about 25 kangaroos.

He describes himself as just an ordinary bloke, and he’s not wealthy – he lives in a basic tin shack with no electricity or water. Much of his work is funded by excessive credit card debt, and public donations.  You can read all about this inspiring man in “Kangaroo Dundee” by himself and James Knight.  And follow up with the TV documentary, screening on TV1 at 8.30pm on Tuesday 21 January 2014.
