How to choose the right book for beginner readers

August 17, 2015

We are gradually introducing a numbering system to our easy reader collection, because we know that finding material for your beginner reader can be tricky.  Adding the numbering may take a while, but most easy readers have a guide on the back also, or you can check with the librarian for advice.

Another tool to use is the “Five Finger Rule”.  Have the child read any page of the book and for each word s/he does not know, put up one finger. At the end of the page, if all five fingers (four fingers and one thumb) are up, then it’s too hard.  If zero fingers are up, it’s too easy, but if two or three fingers are up, that’s just right.
